A weekend of games and fun is on offer at the Johannesburg Expo Centre, where the Comic Con Africa is taking place. It’s a festival for both local and international talent, including some of the world’s biggest in film, gaming, comics and collectibles. Newzroom Afrika’s Katleho Sekhotho reports.

COMIC CON AFRICA DAY 2 WAS AWESOME!!!! Anime is all over here in South Africa. We were lucky to get Aki & Joey here and they were really great and awesome fun. I got to meet them and got cool prints and just had a awesome day at the event. Please check ou the video and let me know what you think.

Otaku Town
Was everything I needed it to be and more. At the heart of the con, in hall 6 across from the main stage is Otaku Town. A quaint setup of Japanese culture and aesthetics. They have Sakura trees [cherry blossoms], chairs lined up facing the stage, a stunning Japanese Zen garden-style bridge, a few related exhibitors and the Japan street setup. We began the morning by learning a few key Japanese phrases and mannerisms, taught by Hiromi sensei from the Japanese Language Club. Throughout the day we learned how to make cosplay, the joys of Gunpla, how to make California rolls with Market Kokoro, got into the anime mecha verse and so much more. JETRO is definitely looking to grow Otaku Town and partner with businesses to bring in more Japanese IPs into the country. This is the place to be for anime fans so please come support the activities so that we can grow it into a bigger exhibit each year.

The festival offers interactions with film stars such as Star Wars’ Anthony Daniels, The Walking Dead’s Ross Marquand and the superhero series Avengers, as well as the chance to connect with Veronica Taylor, who voices Ash Ketchum in Pokemon and many other famous authors and content creators in the fields of comics and movies.
In addition to famous Western comic and animation characters, this year’s Comic Con Africa festival features the Otaku Town area, introducing Japanese pop culture. This area attracts fans to the world of Japanese culture, with ‘Learn Japanese’ sessions organized by the Japan Club of South Africa and the Japanese Embassy in South Africa, book signings exclusive, introducing Japanese cuisine and a series of quizzes with prizes about Japanese anime and manga.
